The "Understanding" boss
Day four of your workplace soul searching.
Is your boss understanding and does he/she take the time to get to know you.
While it is very important to have an understanding boss, there is also a downside to that. Here are some pros and cons:
Pros
When you have an understanding boss things tend to go a little smoother at work. And if there are issues they can help both parties come to an agreement on a situation. They will also get to know their employees personally so they know what is going on in their lives, such as family issues and knowing that the Doctors appointments you might have scheduled are an important part of being a parent. If they have been the boss for awhile then they have been able to gain the experience needed to correct certain problems that arise within the business. They can do so without losing their cool and leaving all parties involved feeling satisfied with how the problem was handled.
Cons
I think the biggest con to an understanding boss is that if your boss is more understanding to some than to others it can create animosity in the workplace. So make sure that you are not making yourself the only one that gets the bosses' attention. Another big one that goes along with that closely is the fact that the boss can also be inappropriate. Sexual harassment is a serious and very real thing these days among both women and men. Both sides are equally as guilty for taking part in this in some form. Inappropriate jokes or body language should never be brought up in your place of work, no matter how much you think others don't mind. There is definitely a time and a place for that behavior. Don't risk yourself or your job over something so silly. Pay attention to body language, that is the first sign that something can turn south quickly if not taken care of. Put your foot down immediately if you observe or witness anything inappropriate going on in your workplace either with you or someone else.
I have read a lot of quotes involving business and my favorite one is that "Employees don't leave companies, they leave managers." This is true. I am struggling at my work with one of our managers. They are not behaving as a manager should and bringing people down around them. We have lost a lot of good employees in the past year and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Unfortunately for me and most people out there I need this job so I cannot just quit. So two ways to deal with this are to either tell somebody about the problem, such as another manager or HR representative, or just try to deal with it. Easier said then done, I know. But try to focus on the things that you are doing well with, and also things that make you happy. Misery needs company, but you don't have to visit with them. Tell yourself you are too busy for it and move on.
I hope that some of this helps you in your workplace if you have similar issues. Please comment or email me (Danderson3724@gmail.com), if you want to personally talk about any workplace issues you are having, and maybe we can get through them together.
